January & February are the coldest months everytime. Temperatures of -15 degrees Celsius are common, and the plants can suffer. Practice has proved that plants can easily bear the cold if they are protected.
If you have a garden with varied terrain, always plant in high places the formations that tolerate cold. Cold air occupies the lower portions, whether we relate to a simple apartment room, a garden or a mountain hollow!
Sharply wind can destroy the plants, so planting a hedge or a line of conifers in the path of the airflow is very important.
Feed your plants with fertilizers rich in nitrogen as soon as summer ends, it encourages the development of a foliage particularly sensitive to cold.
The cold days wind and sun lead to a higher rate of transpiration for plants. Therefore, in periods with little rainfall is good to give your plants a surplus of water.
Young plants or those who hardly tolerate frost can be protected with foil. This may be used also for planning or delaying the harvest.
The plants suffer from frost only if it lasts more than 2-3 days, and the temperature- remain below 10 degrees Celsius.
